Smile. Your immune system will thank you.

Smiling can reduce stress, pain, and your blood pressure.

Even if you have to force that smile, you’ll feel better.

That’s because the body releases three “feel-good” hormones called dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin.

These hormones trick your brain into thinking you’re happy, sparking a multitude of health benefits.

People who smile more generally live longer because they have a better outlook on life.

“Just the physical act of smiling can make a difference in building your immunity,” says Dr. Murray Grossan (as quoted by nbcnews.com), a healthcare specialist who treats conditions affecting your ears, nose, and throat. “When you smile, the brain sees the muscle [action] and assumes that humor is happening.”

What Else Does the Research Say About Smiling?

University of Missouri-Kansas City researchers found that smiling causes others to perceive you as younger and thinner.

The college-aged participants consistently judged happy faces as young in higher age levels in comparison to faces with neutral expressions, and sad faces as old. These findings were published in Plos One.

Depression weakens the immune system, but happiness strengthens it. Add laughter, if you can, to stressful situations.
